- RECAP Weeks 1 and 2 -

Typing from Orange Public Library.
Okay, I had overestimated their Internet Wi-Fi, but at least I am browsing on my laptop - quite a change from my cellphone, if you ask me!
So, what if the library hotspot has painfully low speed internet connection?! And have a limit of 500 MB per session?! And takes ages to load the simplest of pages?! Still better than what I get up at the vineyard!

And this brings me to the question: are you, by any chance, already following the Australian Me facebook page? You might have noticed that I haven't been posting on here for a while.. that is because at Lofty Vineyard I can just access my Facebook and have no way of updating the actual blog. I keep posting daily entries to the facebook page, but of course they are just a couple of sentences typed from my cellphone.

Sunday, 22 September 2013 - Day #229
Typing from my room at the vineyard. I made it!
Journey by train and coach was fun - such beautiful landscapes!!! Loretta came and picked me at the station and introduced me to Charlie, her husband; Will, one of the workers and Ray, the other wwoofer. I share the room with Ray and we don't have a wardrobe, but hey, at least we have separate beds!!

Scrivo da camera mia al vigneto. Il viaggio per venire qui è stato interessante: paesaggi molto diversi tra loro, ma meravigliosi! Loretta è venuta a prendermi alla stazione degli autobus e una volta a casa, mi ha presentato a Charlie, suo marito; Will, uno dei lavoratori alla vineria e Ray, un ragazzo di Taiwan che è wwoofer come me. Io e Ray dividiamo la stanza; non abbiamo un armadio, ma almeno abbiamo i letti separati!!!

Monday, 23 September 2013 - Day #230
First day of work for wwoofer number 119, that is to say, me!
I ploughed the garden this morning and in the afternoon I walked through the rows of vines disentangling the branches from the wires. I was out in the sun all day and now I'm exhausted!

Primo giorno di lavoro per la wwoofer numero 119, che poi sarei io!
Questa mattina ho tolto le erbacce dall'orto e arato il terreno, mentre nel pomeriggio ho camminato lungo le filiere, liberando le viti dai cavi che le sostengono durante la crescita in preparazione alla vendemmia. Ho preso parecchio sole e sono esausta!

Tuesday, 24 September 2013 - Day #231
A beautiful sun shone on the vineyard today. Loretta gave me one of Charlie's shirts so that I could shelter from the sun while walking through the rows like yesterday. In the morning, I vacuumed and cleaned the whole wine cellar - where the Svensons sell wine to the public. The vacuum had stripes to wear it as a backpack: I looked like one of the Ghosts Busters!!!!
We rented some movies this afternoon and tonight we watched Star Trek Into Darkness. Benedict Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Sul vigneto oggi splendeva un sole meraviglioso! Loretta mi ha prestato una delle camice di Charlie per proteggermi dal sole mentre camminavo tra le filiere come ieri.
Nella mattina però, mi sono dedicata alla pulizia della cantina di vini - dove gli Svenson vendono il loro vino al pubblico. L'aspirapolvere era da portare sulla schiena come uno zainetto: sembravo uno dei Ghosts Busters!!!
Questo pomeriggio abbiamo noleggiato dei film in città e questa sera abbiamo guardato Star Trek Into Darkness. Benedict Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, 25 September 2013 -  Day #232
This Aussie style drinking is not going to benefit my liver! Just got back from a dinner out with Loretta and Charlie. We went to this place in Orange called Union Bank: great food and nice atmosphere! I loved it and I might have one too many bottles of ale!!!
Work in the vineyard was good today in the afternoon I slept because I had little strength back from walking all afternoon in the sun.
 
Questo bere all'australiana non credo faccia bene al mio fegato! Sono appena tornata a casa dopo aver mangiato fuori a cena con Charlie e Loretta. Siamo andati in questo posto in Orange chiamato Union Bank e credo di aver bevuto una birra di troppo!
Mi è piaciuto lavorare nel vigneto oggi finito il turno però mi sono ritrovata a dormire perché il sole preso nel primo pomeriggio mi ha parecchio stancata.

Thursday, 26 September 2013 - Day #233
Crazy wind was blowing all over NSW today and we weren't spared here in Orange. Working in the vineyard was 3 times harder and I looked like an idiot with a scarf around my ears, hat and hoodie to top it all and to keep everything in its place. Loretta was nice enough to give me a job inside the house in the afternoon.
 
Oggi c'era un vento assurdo in tutto il NSW e Orange non è stata risparmiata. Lavorare nel vigneto è stato il triplo più difficile e sembravo un'idiota a farlo avvolta in un turbante per proteggere le orecchie, con tanto di cappello e cappuccio per tenere tutto fermo.
Loretta è stata abbastanza gentile da darmi un lavoro in casa nel pomeriggio. 


Friday, 27 September 2013 - Day #234
Today it was such a pleasant day!! Not a trace of the crazy wind we had yesterday!!! In the morning it was just beautiful!
After duty, I went with Charlie and the dogs, Rex and Tank, up to the dam to fish - Charlie put fish there so that he could fish at his leisure.
I took many beautiful pictures - the place looked gorgeous at sunset - and will update them as soon as I get into town.
 
Oggi è stata una giornata meravigliosa! Nessuna traccia del vento assurdo di ieri! Assolutamente fantastico!
Dopo il lavoro, sono andata con Charlie e i cani, Rex e Tank, alla loro pozza d'acqua, un piccolo laghetto artificiale dove Charlie ha messo dei pesci per potersi dedicare alla pesca. Ho scattato un sacco di foto bellissime, perché ovviamente il posto al tramonto era magico, e le caricherò su fb alla prima occasione. 

Saturday, 28 September 2013 - Day #235
Just got back from Justin and Meg's house - on a side note, they have a really interesting house with hay bails walls!! They invited the four of us over and we had a lovely time.
Today in the vineyard I screwed up BIG TIME: we are de-suckering (that is to say removing the buds and little branches other than the two arms selected to give us grapes) and I accidentally removed some of the small bits which were meant to be the new two arms for next year lay-down. Oops. Luckily, that is no major problem, but I felt so awful and even though Loretta and Charlie have been really cool about it, I couldn't help feeling pretty bad and ashamed for that.
Tomorrow is a brand new day!
 
Appena tornata da casa di Justin e Meg - a proposito, hanno una casa interessantissima con muri costruiti con balle di fieno! Hanno invitato tutti e quattro per cena e abbiamo passato una piacevolissima serata!
Oggi in vigna ho combinato un casino Stiamo rimuovendo i boccioli e i piccoli rametti che si formano sul tronco delle viti e che vanno a togliere nutrimento ai due bracci selezionati per darci la frutta, e oggi tra i pinot noir ho accidentalmente rimosso dei rametti che sarebbero dovuti servire tra un anno come nuove braccia da frutta. Oooops! Foortunatamente non è uno di quei problemi irrisolvibili, ma comunque mi sono sentita malissimo!! E c'è da dire che Charlie e Loretta non se la sono presa, ma questo non mi ha risparmiato la vergogna e l'imbarazzo.
Domani è un nuovo giorno! 

Sunday, 29 September 2013 - Day #236
One week in Orange, guys!!! And I'm still here to talk about it
Jokes aside, it was a great week! This afternoon I helped Charlie out with replacing fallen or broken posts in the vineyard and HE MADE ME DRIVE THE TRUCK!!! C R A Z Y ! God, I haven't been driving in months and obviously I had the gear stick on the wrong side!!! It was so fun!
We had Charlie's sister, Joan, and her husband, Pete, over for dinner. We had a lovely time.
 
Una settimana che sono a Orange e sono ancora viva per raccontarlo!! Scherzi a parte, è stata una settimana fantastica!
Questo pomeriggio ho aiutato Charlie a rimpiazzare dei pali rotti nel vigneto e tra le altre cose, MI HA FATTO GUIDARE IL FURGONE!!! Un pazzo! Parliamone, non giuido da mesi per non parlare del fatto che le marce le dovevo cambiare con l'altra mano! È stato divertentissimo!!!
A cena sono rimasti Joan, la sorella di Charlie e suo marito, Pete. Abbiamo passato proprio una bella serata! 

Monday, 30 September 2013 - Day #237
Today Ray and I started fixing up the irrigation pipes through the vineyard, it's a job that will take us a couple of days to finish, but looks easier than what we've been doing lately.
After duty I followed Charlie to the winery. Today he had to tap up barrels, he was nice enough to take time to explain to me what and why he was doing it and even found little tasks I could do to help him out.
 
Oggi io e Ray abbiamo cominciato a lavorare sul sistema di irrigazione del vigneto. È un lavoro che ci prenderà per un paio di giorni, ma almeno sembra meno monotono di quello che abbiamo fatto finora.
Finito di lavorare, ho seguito Charlie nella vineria. Oggi doveva riempire i barili che per le micro-evaporazioni si erano leggermente svuotati. È stato abbastanza gentile da prendersi la briga di spiegarmi che cosa e perché lo stava facendo, oltre che darmi piccole mansioni così che potessi essere d'aiuto.

Weather was awful today. Luckily we sheltered just in time!
Sorry I haven't anything better to add, but it was a pretty uneventful day.
 
Oggi il tempo è stato pessimo. Per fortuna siamo riusciti a ripararci in tempo!
Scusate se non ho altro da aggiungere, ma è stata una giornata senza troppi avvenimenti.

Wednesday, 2 October 2013 - Day #239
Today Mitch - Loretta and Charlie's younger son - and his girlfriend Alexis visited Lofty Vineyard and will stay with us for a couple of days. Oops, should I say Mitch's /fiancée/? They just announced their engagement!!!! Charlie doesn't know yet because he'll be back to Orange only tomorrow night, so you'd better keep the secret! ;)
 
Oggi Mitch - il figlio minore di Charlie e Loretta - e la sua ragazza Alexis sono venuti in visita alla vigna, dove rimarranno per un paio di giorni. Oops, dovrei forse dire la /fidanzata/ di Mitch, dato che hanno appena annunciato che si sposeranno l'anno prossimo!!
Charlie non sa ancora nulla perché ritornerà a Orange solo domani sera.. Fino a quel momento, acqua in bocca! ;)

Thursday, 3 October 2013 - Day #240
Weather was c-razy today! It ranged from windy to sunny, passing through snow and hail at different stages.
Loretta got us to work inside, which was good, but gave us one of the worst and most useless jobs ever: sweeping the floor of The Shed. Now, the latter is, as you may well imagine, the dirtiest place in Lofty Vineyard after the gate we keep the chickens in. A very thick layer of dust and dirt covers everything in there. After today's cleaning, said layer might have gotten slightly thinner, what I'm sure of is, we breathed half of it!
 
Oggi il tempo è stato allucinante. Siamo passati dal vento al sole, con neve e grandine di mezzo!
Loretta ci ha tenuto a lavorare al coperto, dandoci però uno dei lavori peggiori e più inutili di sempre: spazzare la polvere dal capanno attrezzi. Ora, si tratta di uno dei posti più sporchi al Lofty Vineyard, subito dopo il pollaio: uno strato dall'indicibile spessore di polvere e sporcizia ricopre qualsiasi cosa nel capanno. Dopo la pulizia di oggi, potrebbe darsi che il suddetto strato di schifezza possa essere diminuito, quel che è certo è che io e Ray ne abbiamo respirato la metà!!
