Day #117

Writing from Jess's room in Kew, VIC.
As you may know, early this morning I flew to Melbourne to meet my friend whom I worked with in Maldives and who lives there. The flight went all right, no delays and even though the landing was a bit rough and the arrival terminal was the closest thing to a converted warehouse I've ever seen, everything went smoothly and the Skybus took me to the City in less than half an hour.

I walked straight to the Queen Victoria Markets - picture Covent Garden in London, can you imagine it 7 or 8 times bigger?!? They are huge, covered markets, where you can find anything from fresh fruit, to original belt buckles, from salted nuts to fairy costumes. I kind of got lost and missed all the awesome things I could have had in the food hall, not that I didn't enjoy the pizza I had, I'm just saying I might have wanted to try a doughnut or a churro for a change..

Anyway, I still haven't mentioned the most important thing about the day - well second, the first being that meeting Jess was bananas! I mean, isn't the World AWESOME? You can just travel to one city and meet amazing friends you worked with on a tropical island, isn't that just amazing? 
Anyway, I was saying: the weather was glorious!!! A tid bit too warm to wear both my sweater and coat! For Melbourne standards? It was the best day they had in a while!!!
I love this city's colours! In Brisbane, even though it's autumn, you don't have any yellow leaves nor carpets of fallen ones on the sidewalks. On the other hand, in Melbourne it does look like we're in fall! Beautiful! The sky was so blue today.

To get to Jess I rode on the 35 tram, which runs around the city centre and is free. It was a pretty good ride even though the tram itself was a little bit old and rusty and threatened to fall over during  a turn.

Jess's house is huge and it's so pretty. There I met her family, Jacinta and Ken, her parents, and Maeve, her younger sister. We had a small barbecue for dinner and everything was super tasty. As a dessert, we jumped on this totally awesome fruit basket and now Jess and I, we're getting ready to hang out at the pub where she works, The Harp.
Cristina, a friend of hers, is coming to pick us up any minute. Jess says I won't know what'll hit me tonight. I am kind of ready to party, I mean, it has been 4 months since I last hung out with my friends in Italy for drinks, it's about time I go out again. 

Scrivo dalla camera di Jess in Kew, un sobborgo di Melbourne, nello stato del Victoria.
Come potete ben sapere, questa mattina ho preso un aereo per Melbourne per incontrarmi e passare qualche giorno con Jess, un'amica conosciuta mentre lavoravamo alle Maldive che vive qui. Il volo è andato bene e anche se l'atterraggio è stato un po' brusco e il terminal per gli arrivi ricordava più un capannone abbandonato che ad un vero e proprio aeroporto, tutto è filato liscio e lo Skybus - il pullman navetta che collega l'aeroporto alla città - mi ha portata in centro in meno di mezzora.
Una volta in Città, mi sono diretta subito verso il mercato coperto più famoso dell'Australia, i Queen Victoria Markets - se siete stati a Londra, immaginatevi Covent Garden, e ora pensatelo 7 o 8 volte più grande!!! È un posto enorme e ci si può trovare più o meno di tutto, dalla frutta fresca alle fibbie per cinture, dalle noccioline ai vestiti da fatina. Era così grande che credo di essermi persa, della serie che pensavo di essere arrivata al punto dove avevano tutte le bancarelle del cibo e mi sono presa una pizza, per poi accorgermi che c'erano un sacco di altre cose che avrei potuto mangiare!! Non che non mi sia piaciuta la pizza che ho preso, ma se avessi saputo che c'erano ciambelle e churros, magari avrei optato per i dolci!

Comunque, non ho ancora detto la cosa più importante della giornata, okay, magari la seconda cosa più importante della giornata, perché naturalmente la pole position spetta a Jess! Parliamone, è assurdo che siamo qui insieme!!! Rendiamoci conto di quanto è MERAVIGLIOSO il mondo se semplicemente volando da una città all'altra puoi incontrarti con vecchie amicizie strette su un'isoletta nell'Oceano Indiano?!
Dicevo, la seconda cosa più importante riguardo oggi è che il tempo è stato semplicemente bellissimo!!! Anche fin troppo caldo per indossare sia la felpa pesante che mi sono portata dietro e il cappotto! Per gli standards di Melbourne? È stata una delle migliori giornate che hanno avuto in parecchio tempo!
Adoro i colori di questa città! A Brisbane anche se è autunno tutti gli alberi sono dannatamente verdi e non c'è una foglia gialla a pagarla, ma qui!!! Melbourne sa che siamo in autunno e risplende in tutti i suoi vialoni alberati d'arancio! Bellissimo! E che cielo azzurro!!!

Per incontrarmi con Jess, dai mercati ho preso il tram numero 35 che offre corse gratis intorno al centro della città. È stata una corsa parecchio carina, se non che il vagone era parecchio vecchierello e arrugginito e quando ha curvato ho temuto il peggio!
La casa di Jess è enorme e bellissima! Qui ho incontrato la sua famiglia, Jacinta e Ken, i suoi genitori e Maeve, sua sorella minore. Abbiamo fatto un piccolo barbecue per cena - buonissimo - e come dessert, ci siamo abbuffati con il bouquet di frutta che vedete nelle foto qui sopra!
Ora io e Jess ci stiamo per preparare per uscire. Andiamo al The Harp, che è dove Jess lavora come barista. Cristina, una sua amica passa a prenderci tra poco, Jess mi ha appena finito di dire che non so cosa mi aspetta! Non prendetemi male, sono pronta per festeggiare e divertirmi, anche perché sono passati 4 mesi dall'ultima volta che mi sono fatta una bevuta decente coi miei amici, ed ero ancora in Italia! Diciamo che era ora che uscissi un po'!
