Day #115

This is the reason why I never do anything spontaneously: what if something does go according to the plan? Which plan? You decided just yesterday you were leaving in two days, you do not have a plan. Exactly my point.

By now, even those of you who don't know me personally might have realized I am something of a control freak and even though the adrenaline rush I had yesterday still gets to me sometimes, mainly I am constantly worrying about getting my luggage ready, printing my boarding passes, finding a map of the city, what to do and what to see once in Melbourne.. I am freaking out - in a positive and negative way, at the same time, which is tiring, in case you were wondering.

I am going to bed now because a) I need rest b) it has been a long night at the restaurant c) I need to stop thinking about what I'm forgetting to pack.

Day #114

OMG. I just did something completely crazy and impulsive and in the moment and - have I already mentioned crazy?! I got a ticket to fly to Melbourne this Sunday. Oh my. That is like in two days, since Thursday has already passed for me. Oh my. I can still feel the adrenaline rush that started when I bought the tickets.

How did this come to happen? Okay, so tonight Davina updated the duty roster for next week and I got Monday through Wednesday off. You may also remember that this Sunday I will be off as well, that makes it 4 days off in a row and I'd be a fool to let this opportunity slip in between my fingers. Seize the fleeting moment, they say. Who knows when I have another chance like this one?
Before taking any decision, I double checked with my friend Jess, who used to work in the Maldives with me and lives in Melbourne, whether she'd be free those days to hang around and laugh about old times [speaking of which, one year ago, today, I was leaving Iru Fushi and flying back to Italy]. Not only she managed to get the days off, but she also offered me to stay over at her place! Too nice of hers!!! Gosh, I can't wait to see her again!!! Reminds me of so many good nights on the island with my friends! These four days in Melbourne are going to be AWESOME. I cannot wait!!! Oh my!!!

OMIODDIO. O, mamma. Sento ancora l'adrenalina anche se ho comprato i biglietti tre quarti d'ora fa!
Come è successo? Carpe diem, no?
Gentilissima!! Omioddio, non vedo l'ora di rivederla!! Mi ritornano alla mente così tante fantastiche serate passate coi miei amici sull'isola!!! Questi quattro giorni a Melbourne saranno FANTASTICI. Non vedo l'ora! Sto male.

Day #113

Hi there!!! Writing a really quick post tonight because I gotta sleep!!!
Okay, so I worked at the markets today with Sabrina and Enzo. The latter was demonstrating two recipes for pasta on a stage today, and in the meantime we took care of the stand.
It was a good day, weather was nicer than last week and yes - thank God! - warmer! We still had plenty of pasta left to sell at the end of the day, but I guess that's because Enzo made a little bit too much.
Amanda & Annie, sitting on the floor after having packed their stand up.
As any other Wednesday, I got my pastries from the lovely Amanda and Annie - today I got a petite Red Velvet: yummy! - some fruit and fresh pasta. And several other sweets from other stands spread throughout the market square. In case you were wondering, yes, I do have a sweet tooth.

Adoro i dolci.

Day #112

Day started off pretty early with a Skype call from one of my best friends in my hometown, talked for about an hour and a half before it got too late in Italy and my stomach started growling for breakfast. It's so nice talking to people back home :)

I spent the rest of the day reading and drinking hot beverages - tea, coffee, milk and chocolate.
At six something, Casey and Alex picked me up and the three of us went to the Dendy Cinema down at Portside Wharf to watch The Hangover - Part III.
Of course I was expecting something different from the first two movies, they as much as promised us that. There where some hilarious scenes, but what I liked the most about this one was all the sneaky little - and not so little - references to the previous movies. I liked how they connected them all in this last chapter.
It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it was a good way to spend a couple of hours and it's not as if I didn't enjoy some Bradley Cooper on screen - he should have taken off his shirt when asked to, by the way.

Going to bed early tonight as tomorrow the day starts even earlier as I'll be down at the markets to work with Sabrina at the pasta stand.

Day #111

Every once in a while, even I need to take a break from my super exciting life and dedicate myself to more earthly matters such as laundry and vacuuming. And basicaly, that's what I did today.
I Skyped with my friend Greg and got some more movie recommendations, finished watching one of the said movies, hoovered the floors, cleaned my bathroom, did my laundry, cooked and read.
Now I'm going to bed - and it's just 11:30pm - so that I can store as much energy as possible and brace myself for the coming days: tomorrow I'll still be off, but on Wednesday I'll work at the markets and I will have double shift on both Thursday and Saturday.

Not a very interesting post today, but nothing really interesting happened, so, there you go.

Day #110

Oh boy, I just solved with the help of one of my best friends a HUGE trig problem. Never. Again.

Now, of course it wasn't 'huge', but you have to understand I haven't studied trig for nearly two years now - and yes, my life is better because of that; but when my dad asked for my help with a math problem my little sister of 13 had to solve for school - speaking of WHAT THE HECK DO THEY TEACH OUR CHILDREN?!, I couldn't say no.  After realizing it was harder than I remembered and checking the wikipedia page for sine and cosine, I resolved to ask for an engeneer-to-be's assistance, as I wasn't sure of my calculations. Turned out I did alright, but sadly, I'm still not able to use a freaking calc - there you have it why I thought something was wrong! Anyway, now that the math emergency has been called off, I can go and sleep soundly.

Today was a nice day. Weather was glorious, even though it turned chilly during the late afternoon. My duty wasn't too tragic as Davina was there at rush hour and Tony was always willing to help me if I needed anything.
After work, I went with Paolo and Sabrina at the Powerhouse in New Farm to meet up with Luca, Martina and Nicola for drinks. The place was packed and after some beers and chips, we left home-bound to have dinner there.

As I left my laptop unattended after dinner, Paolo and Sabri posted a very funny thing on my facebook timeline, so if you noticed anything that didn't sound like me, well, it wasn't me, then. Ahahah oh my, thank goodness I realized what they had done in time!!! We couldn't stop laughing after that! Those bastards!

Oh mamma.
Quanto abbiamo riso dopo.. Che bastardi, che sono!

Day #109

I want this post to be quick. Challenge accepted.

Today I had double shift at the restaurant, but surprisingly it wasn't too hard or tiring.
Let me explain. First of all, not many people asked for coffees at lunch, so I could focus and make fine ones. Then, at dinner, since I started late - at 7 o'clock, Davina asked me to help her out behind the counter with polishing glasses and cutlery and be a runner. That did the trick, I wasn't stressed at all. I took the food to the tables when it was ready, polished what needed to be polished, cleaned the tables from empty dishes and glasses. Hassle free.
Even Raymond and Bruce, two of our regulars, noticed I was more relaxed this evening, less frantic and stressed - by the way, these are the two gentlemen whose coming I used to dread, because they would ALWAYS get the Chianti basket and there was a time I didn't know how to open the effing bottle. Truth is, they are fun and slightly crazy old men who love their Chianti cold.

Another table asked me to sing Happy Birthday in Italian to them and, well, I did it.

Voglio un post veloce questa sera. Sfida accettata.

Day #108

Three little thoughts about today, because I'm pretty tired and I crave for my bed at the moment.

Thought #1 - You know how you always think of 'midnight snacks' as something they do only in movies or you do only when wasting yourself on alcohol with friends? Well, it's just past midnight and I finished the pasta they made for me at the restaurant barely 10 minutes ago - yes, the pasta came with bacon. yes, I asked for it. Working in a restaurant does mess up your eating time. Big time.

Thought #2 - Let's bust some stereotypes now: a young lady of 21 who spends all the day drinking tea, wrapped in her fleece blanket, reading, IS NOT a sad and lonely person. She's just damn cold and sick of the rain and might be grumpy for reasons completely unrelated to PMS. Just checked the Wikipedia page, by the way, and nearly spilled my tea when I read the bit about the 'high caffeine intake'.

Thought #3 - I hate it when at the restaurant Fridays are as busy as a regular Saturday. Today was hell, and there was no Tunda to help out. Davina appreciates that I'm making an effort in calming down and not panicking, but says I still have a long way to go. I am so not looking forward to tomorrow: double shift, lunch AND dinner. Somebody rescue me!

WHAT?!?! By the time I finished writing this, it's already 1:20AM?!? I'm either the slowest typer ever existed or the World's biggest procrastinator. I have a feeling I might be closest to the latter scenario or a merry combination of the two.

Day #107

Today I had a great day. I enjoyed the birthday present Karen and her family got me and went to Stafford Heights to get a facial and pedicure done at Zara's. Let me tell you, it was wonderful! Zara is such a lovely woman.
I suffered a little bit in the beginning, as I started off with waxing, but then together with the pedicure I got a foot massage and that was amazing. You never realize how much tension you acumulate on your ankles until someone gently walks you through Hell's pains trying to release it. Love my new bronze nail polish, by the way.
Getting the facial done after that was so relaxing. My skin still feels so soft!

Later I went at Karen's, even though Karen was not there - since she left yesterday - so I should probably say I went at Casey's. I made gnocchi for dinner and Alex, on that matter, remarked that it was kind of funny to have people over who cooked for him, but enjoyable nonetheless. Gnocchi are a safe meal for me to prepare; I just had to take care of the sauce, in the end. Next time I'll do even less than that as Alex said he's going to cook :D
Casey gave me an old camera of hers and Ash's that nobody was using anymore. That's awesome because Claire won't be back before a fortnight and next week at the markets there's the Italian Festival. It'll be a nice chance for me to show you Enzo, Annie and Amanda.
Speaking of Annie and Amanda, later we had pastries as well. Oh my, Annie's husband made this super tasty Black Forest petite cake that was just heavenly. So darn good!

Day #106

How embarassing.
As it is Wednesday, I set to meet with Jess in the morning on the 300 bus to have breakfast together downtown. This was the plan. Pretty simple, uh? I mean, set the alarm clock, wake up, get dressed and off I go. Yeah... well, I never got past the first point of the list. I did set my alarm and I stopped it when it went off but I did not wake up, I fell asleep again instead. What woke me was, in fact, Jess' text that said she was on the bus coming my way and she was waiting for me. Oh my. I cursed myself.
I jumped out of bed and wore the first thing I found in the wardrobe. Actually, had a change of mind and decided to wear my Bazinga tee at the last minute, as I thought I might as well try with an ironic angle on the situation.

No worries, anyway. I met with Jess at a Starbucks downtown only 10 minutes later after she got there. We had apple turnover from the markets as we were walking towards the Aussie Farmers headquarters in South Bank.

As I left in a hurry, I forgot to bring my book with me and so decided to help Sabri and Enzo out at the pasta stand. The weather was awful and we were freezing, but I got some more coffee for us and later Enzo cooked us pasta.
By the way, my t-shirt rocked the markets. Annie, from the pastry stand next to Enzo's, said her kids would love my tee and a couple of other people stared and pointed at the Bazinga written on my chest. Either that or they were staring at my tits, so I'm kind of leaning toward the former. Two girls asked me if I had been tested and I called back my mother had me. Gotta love The Big Bang Theory!

Once home, I was speaking with Paolo and mentioning how cold I was at the markets and in general these days and he gave me a soft and warm fleece blanket. I've been wrapped in it all afternoon long. Nice.

Today Karen and Tony left for Europe. I will see Karen no sooner than mid-September, but tomorrow I'm already dining at her place with Casey and her boyfriend Alex. I got gnocchi and pastries at the markets for us.

Piuttosto semplice, no?

Day #105

I just recently came to the realization that I love bacon. Seriously, at first I thought these Australians were a little bit weird always having chilly and bacon in pretty much everything they eat, but now I do see the appeal of a good serve of pasta in Napoli sauce with heaps of bacon in it.
I still can pull myself to eat crispy bacon for breakfast, but I'm a supporter of bacon and tomato sauce.

Kind of a random way to start a blog entry, but yeah, that's what you get today.
I also went downtown this morning, but it was just to get a new pair of shoes for work. The previous one had holes and the sole was too consumed in some spots it didn't even deserve being called 'sole'.

ps. Today is my daddy's birthday!!

ps. Oggi è il compleanno del mio papà! Tanti auguri Papo!

Day #104

Nothing much to say about today. Yesterday night Internet was down in our unit and I spent the morning updating the blog and uploading the pictures that Karen and I took in our little road trips.

It's getting colder. Our unit faces the wrong side of the building and never gets any sun in. I'm currently typing from under my duvet and still I can hardly feel my frozen feet anymore!
I'm afraid I might be catching something, I slept two hours and a half this late afternoon. Either that or my body is sending me hints I should consider hibernating.

Update: I just put on some socks: much better! I wish I had gloves as well.

Day #103

This morning with Karen I went to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Some facts about Lone Pine:
- It's the world's first and largest koala sanctuary, with over 130 koalas;
- Was founded in 1927;
- The sanctuary began with two koalas called Jack and Jill;
- It's located in Brisbane;
- The sanctuary is one of the very few sanctuaries in the world where visitors are allowed to hold koalas for a fee - in New South Wales, for example, they just passed a law that forbids you to cuddle one;
- Famous visitors of the sanctuary include Pope John Paul, Eric Clapton, Jackie Chan, Cher, Janet Jackson, Carey Mulligan, Hayden Panettiere, Matchbox 20, Yellowcard, Taylor Swift.

And now, pictures time! You can find the whole set of them on the Australian Me Facebook page.

It was a lovely day. The weather has cooled down a lot this past weekend, but the sun is still hot and warm.
In Lone Pine we were able to see plenty other animals than just koalas. Parrots, cockatoos - talking cockatoos, precisely. I was so startled when it greeted me 'Hello!' - platypuses, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, dingoes and huge lizards. It was a wonderful experience! Especially since the kangaroos and wallabies are roaming free in a reserve, where you can go up to them and pat them, feed them with the food you can buy at the store close-by and yes, take plenty of pictures as well!

This evening I had to work at the restaurant. One family I waited two weeks ago or something came back tonight and when they saw me they told me the three kids had been hoping to see me since I wasn't there last week. How cute is that? On a side note, those three kids are among the most polite little creatures I've ever met. No request comes out of their mouth without a 'please' or a 'thank you'. Lovely!

- è il rifugio per koala più vecchio e più grande al mondo, con più di 130 koala;
- è stato fondato nel 1927;
- il rifugio è cominciato con due koala chiamati Jack e Jill;
- è a Brisbane, tipo a 15 minuti dal centro città;
- il rifugio è uno dei pochi al mondo dove i visitatori hanno il permesso di tenere in braccio un koala pagando una tassa - foto compresa! Nel New South Wales, per esempio, hanno appena passato una legge che proibisce di prendere tra le braccia un koala;

Incredibile. E tenerissimo!

Day #102

I'm glad to hear that some of you were amused by my little trick with the soup last night. I'm afraid there won't be anything as funny on today's blog entry, thank goodness!
I had double shift, served breakfast early in the morning and later came back to the restaurant for dinner. At dinner time we were packed. Literally we had no tables available, everything was booked.

Davina thinks I freak out whenever we are busy, I wouldn't have agreed, but when she suggested I should breathe in slowly and then breathe out, I did realize I was probably on edge. I mean, I do not do it consciously, otherwise I'd try stopping myself from getting there. I think the problem is I am too worried I can't do everything I am supposed to, then I'm worried the customers might have been waiting too long for their orders, I'm also worried about spilling the soup and in general not being in control of the situation. Sounds like I do freak out a little bit, but at least I seem to be able to pull a nice façade when I'm in front of the patrons. Too bad I can't fool Davina as well.
If I were more organized, probably I wouldn't feel that things are slipping out of control, or maybe, if I just stopped expecting so much from myself, I'd be able to give myself a break, relax a little bit and still offer the best service I can.

Ho fatto turno doppio oggi.

Day #101

Tragedy.
God, I don't even want to talk about it. I did it; after two months of working at the restaurant, I eventually did it: tonight I spilled some soup on a customer's shoulder. God, I feel awful about it. He was very kind, told me not to worry, that we are in Australia here and that it was kind of okay for me to do that - what? - but still, I couldn't have been more mortified.
I'm so stupid, I was so busy worrying about balancing the two dishes I was carrying with my left arm that I did not notice the seafood stew I had in my right hand was slowly spilling out of the brim. If I hadn't been bringing three dishes at that time I might have facepalmed myself. So. Awkward. Jeesh, I still feel so bad for the poor old guy. He was so nice about it all and I freaking poured hot soup on him.
I knew there would have been a first time, but the thought doesn't cheer me up. And I know I should be glad he didn't complain or went to talk to Davina about it, but still, I can't help feeling ashamed and sorry.

The rest of the night was good, we were pretty busy at the restaurant and Tunda and I got nice enough tips. Pretty much everybody complimented us on the service, I bet the soup guy didn't. Ok, I'll just stop writing for today because I'd rather just sulk on the stew business on my own than rant about it on here.

Tragedia.
Mamma mia, mi sento male solo a pensarci.

Day #100

So, we hit the three digits number today. Cool.
Today the weather sucked. Cloudy and cold. The restaurant was almost empty, which was good because a) I didn't have to make too many coffees b) I had enough time to do everything that needed to be done behind the counter; but, at the same time, it was very bad for business: only had two tables for lunch.

At one of them, there were sitting four Americans. I'm not specifying this for your sake, or mine, but they mentioned it three or four times, so I guess it worths while telling. Whatever, I asked them whereabouts in the States and they said they came from Indiana, 'in the middle, you know'.
Now, I did happen to know that, because a) John Green lives in Indiana and b) his latest novel, The Fault in Our Stars, is set there as well. So I mentioned the only city I know of: Indianapolis. My customers were so surprised I knew about their hometown, because indeed they came from Indianapolis! I told them one of my favourite authors lived there and that he set his latest novel, The Fault in Our Stars, there as well.
And no, I don't think it's weird I know in which city John Green lives. I know where plenty of other people live, no big deal.

Dunque, abbiamo finalmente raggiunto le tre cifre! Fico.
Oggi il tempo ha fatto schifo. Nuvoloso e freddo.

Day #99

Going to sleep in the next 10 minutes because.. sleepiness.
Today I
- woke up fairly early to meet up with Jess and have breakfast at the Vanilla Pod up on Lancaster Rd. I had scones with raspberry jam and cream like last time because it's just so good. Pretty much it was the birthday breakfast I did not get on Sunday. We agree we will be back at the café in the afternoon next time, so we can get one of their sparkly cupcake - gosh, I'm such a sucker for sweets.
Credit for this pic goes to Fiver75 on TripAdvisor
- rode the bus with Jess, then she left for work and I went to the Queensland Museum in South Bank. My favourite room was probably the one about the life of sea turtles. They had beautiful plastics and walking around the room you could follow the likely ''story'' of the little turtles that hatched right next to the entrance of the room. I had to skip the last panel because it was about turtle poachers and what they do with the carapaces and - jeez, just thinking about it now gives me the creeps, so yeah, I skipped that and walked away quickly from the room. I also liked the Collectomania exposition: licence plates, pineapple themed gadgets, teapots, a model of Bilbo's hobbit hole, all collected through the years by obsessed and weird Queenslanders; the collection of butterflies, in the biodiversity section, was pretty as well, though the window about spiders was awful and I deliberately stayed clear of the one dedicated to snakes.
- had a normal day at the restaurant but got pretty good tips. I'm dreading tomorrow's 10 to 15 shift. I just hope there won't be too many people asking for coffees.

Ps. Today is Claire's birthday! Happy birthday Claire!!! We miss you!

Vado a letto tra 10 minuti perché sto crollando.
Oggi
Taken from the Queensland Museum website

Ps. Oggi è il compleanno di Claire! Tanti auguri, Claire! Ci manchi!!

Day #98

I had the day off today and with Karen we went for another little trip.
Here's a map I drew, so I wouldn't count too much on its accuracy, but still, at least it shows you where we went today.
We headed south-east this time, towards Moreton Bay. We stopped at Wellington Point, the Old Cleveland Lighthouse - took some pretty terrific pictures there that I will be uploading as soon as Karen emails them to me - and had lunch there with fish and chips, then kept driving towards Victoria Point, and as last stop, the Redland IndigiScapes Centre, which is best known for hosting koalas. I probably should say that it was best known for that, since they haven't been seeing a koala in 6 months, but yeah. It was nice even though I did not get to see any koala - we saw a lot of spider and huge spiderwebs instead. They also had plenty of different brochures on things to do in Queensland and other infos, so that was good.

In the evening, I bought dinner to Sabri and Paolo in this place down in Fortitude Valley called Harajuku Gyoza, famous for its dumplings and weird way of serving saké - the waitress screams like a mad woman as she pours the liquor into the glass to the brim. Sabri says I could have a future there - as I tend to speak loud and scream even lauder - if only I looked asian.

Going to bed now. Tomorrow I'm meeting Jess for breaky at the Vanilla Pod in Ascot. Anyone wants to join us?

Adesso vado a letto.

Day #97

Picture taken by Ashlee
I am so lucky that I got to celebrate my birthday, not once, but twice! Today at Karen's we had such a fine dinner!!! Chicken brest marinated in herbs, mash potatoes, steamed veggies and salad. Karen confessed she looked up the recipe for the passion fruit cheesecake, but goodness may, I would have never thought it had to be prepared so much in advance either. Oh well, we had red velvet cake and I can't think of anything better at the moment!!!
Karen, Ash, Casey and Alex sang me happy birthday, and even though i braced myself to blow all the candles Karen placed on top of it, I nearly turned them all off taking in breath! Oh God, still thinking about the cake. Man, was it good! Tomorrow I'm having another trip with Karen so I might get another bit! Yay!

They got me a pedicure in a beauty shop close to where they live, which is awesome, because it was about time I got my feet done again! Besides, what's not to like in a pedicure?!?
I also got a beautiful birthday card!!

After dinner we sat and watched the 80 minutes season finale of Revenge. Ash and I nearly had an heart attack twice, when the screen got black and paused for a second too long before moving onto the following scene. We also gave each other a high-five when we thought we had found out who was going to die - we're weird - and secretly rejoyced about it - and such bad people. In the meantime, I bet Casey was rolling her eyes at us with a you-guys-should-just-shut-up-and-watch-the-show expression on her face. She was right of course, if only I could watch TV like that!!!

I had such a pleasant evening! When going home, I thanked Karen also on behalf of my mom and dad. I'm sure they are as grateful as I am for the way she and her family welcomed me.

Ps. Almost forgetting! My friend Anna sent me a birthday card from Italy and I got it today!!! Such a beautiful surprise! There was a picture of us with it as well!!! Thanks Anna, here's already your birthday, by the way.. even though I'm posting this entry as 13th of May. Happy birthday to you too.

Day #96

Happy Mother's Day and happy birthday to me!
Yep, that's right! The big 21, will finally be able to enter a bar after 9pm next time I find myself in downtown Portland, OR and not be kicked out, and I mean, I wasn't even planning on getting anything to drink that time! I just wanted - wait for it - a cheesecake, for crying out loud. Whatever, feels nice to know that I can legally get drunk everywhere now. LOL

Being Mother's Day, we were pretty busy at the restaurant for both breakfast and lunch, but nothing tragic. Besides, Davina and Tunda were both there and I didn't have to make any coffee. Nice. I was released at two and got to the closest supermarket - which happens to be right across the street - to get muffins and - am I THAT predictable? - cheesecake.
So yeah, back home I had lunch on cheesecake and later had a muffin with Sabri as afternoon snack. I wish I could tell you that when Paolo brought home some cake from the function he cooked for today, I did not eat that as well, but it's my birthday and if I cannot get cake and sweets on this day, then when can I? I got sick, of course. I mean, nothing serious, I just had to wait 4 hours before I could eat or drink anything else.

With Paolo and Sabri, we went to Toombul shopping centre, where they have a cinema as well and we watched Iron Man 3, which was awesome. This was the first Iron Man movie I'd ever seen, because.. reasons, but since I enjoyed his character in the half of The Avangers movie I actually got to see - you should know that Captain America is the only Marvel Movie I've seen from beginning to end, I went rapidly through wikipedia and trailers and snippets of the previous movies to get acquainted with the story.
I wish I had Gwyneth Paltrow's abs. And legs! I mean, she's in a far better shape than I am and she's more than twice my age!!! This is what turning 21 does to me: making me think of the degradation of my body in 20 years. God, I need a good shrink. But first, I think I'll try with a good night of well deserved sleep.

Thank you all for reading, thank you for the birthday wishes and for thinking of me even for just half a minute today. Love you x

Buona Festa della Mamma! E buon compleanno a me!

Baci.

Day #95

My laptop battery is dying. And I mean for good. An ominous sign keeps appearing on my screen and hints that the computer might shut down any second and that I should really start thinking of replacing its battery.

I just got back from the restaurant. Double shift today, lunch and dinner. I liked the dinner better, first of all because it was pouring rain at lunch time and second because I am so conscious of my coffees. The other day I was preparing one and Tunda saw my hand shaking, she inquired about it and I confessed I was afraid of messing it up. Hopeless. I'm just hopeless.
At dinner, there came this couple with their teenage daughter. Couple of weeks ago father and daughter had a reservation and I thought I remembered whose name it was under. It was clear we recognized one another and this is pretty much how the conversation went like:
Father: (joking) I see you are still here!
Me: (joking back) Yes, they haven't kicked me out yet. (business like, handing out the menus) Can I get you anything to drink right away? I remember last time you had a red wine, did you like that one?
Father: You have a really good memory!
Of course I did not remember which kind of red wine they had, we have something like nine or ten on the wine list, but I decided to give it a shot and said  'I'd have a really good memory if I remembered your name was S-blahblah' and it was indeed! Not S-blahblah of course, but for the sake of the argument their family name doesn't really matter, let's say it's a popular last name. They weren't the only one shocked by my wonderful mind (:P) Man, I do have a good memory!
Truth to be told, I might remember them better than others, because I was kind of afraid of the guy, but he turned out nice in the end last time, and this time was just too pleased to even bother being anything but nice. Maybe he's more relaxed when his wife is around. Well, anyway, they did enjoy the dinner and said they'll be back.

Going to bed now. Tomorrow is going to be hell at the restaurant. I just wish the weather would be nice.

Ora vado a letto. Domani al ristorante sarà un inferno. Vorrei solo che il tempo fosse decente.

Day #94

Oh God, I did so many things today to write about it all..
This is a map that Karen made me to show me all the places we visited today. It was just the two of us, Tony was away for work. We hit the road at approximately 10-ish and were back by 5pm. Among the places we visited, Mt. Nebo, Mt. Glorious and Mt. Mee, the Somerset Dam, then we drove through Kilcoy and all its creeks, stopped in Dayboro for the uptenth coffee of the day - I've been running on coffee lately.

Then in the evening I hung out with Jess and her wild Aussie Farmers colleagues - telltale detail: this guy Des, after introducing himself started singing the rif of Young, Wild and Free. We were in West End, in this pub called The Boundary. Jess' friends are cool, it was a little bit hard for me to understand everything they said, especially if they weren't directing the conversation to me because there was just so much noise in the pub and each and everyone of them spoke English in a different accent! Irish, scottish, british, american.. I got a little bit confused, but did quite all right. I left early, around midnight, as I had to catch the CityCat to get back to Hamilton. I ran my way down from West End to South Bank, but eventually got the ferry.

Now it's late and even though I'd love to tell you more about the amazing day I had, the things I saw and the people I met, I NEED to sleep now. Tomorrow I'm starting at 10 and it's already 2AM - my bad. I took down notes anyway, so I'll tell you more tomorrow and in the next days.

ps. almost forgetting about it: Claire got her Visa granted!!! Yay!!! So happy!

Yay! Sono stra contenta!

Day #93

Even quicker post than yesterday.
Tomorrow I'm going with Karen and Tony on a one day trip, we're still making up our minds on the destinantion so I can't tell you more for the moment, and since we're leaving fairly early not true, they'll pick me up at 9:30, but still I want to go to sleep early. Besides, it's not like I did anything special today.
I had a day off and I spent it half sleeping - woke up around 11:30 - and half reading. Reading was a good distraction, otherwise I'm afraid I'd have spent the day eating! OMG. Isn't food just awesome?
Might be the right time to get a medical check and make sure I do not have any worm in my stomach enjoying my food for me.

Day #92

I am so tired tonight.
As I mentioned you yesterday, today I met with Jess for coffees and later visited Sabrina, Enzo, Annie and Amanda at the markets. I didn't get passion fruit cheesecake today - what a plot twist! - because there were so many new things to try! For instance, raspberry cheesecake and chocolate silk cups garnished with chocolate fondue dipped strawberry.

Nice day at the resaturant as well. Kind of busy but not excessively. If only my wrist didn't hurt this much :( I'm constantly afraid of suddenly jerking it in some way due to the pain and thus losing the grip on the dishes I'm carrying - that's a scarier scenario than you might think.

Today is fictional character Katniss Everdeen's birthday. This reminds me I know plenty of awesome people who celebrate their bithdays in May.

Day #91

Really quick post because tomorrow I'm meeting Jess for breakfast and I have to catch the bus at 9.

Today was good at the restaurant. We had some customers - whom I wouldn't call regular, but still, they've already been there at least once since I started working there - that looked pleased I recognized them - sounds easier than it is, by the way - and from my part, I was proud of my good visual memory.

It wasn't too busy, and probably that is one of the reasons why I felt this good. I like when everything is under control. The mood I left the place in last Saturday was long gone and forgotten, thank goodness! I'm happy and extremely relieved!

Last thing, I know I'm frail and prone to complain about physical pain, but I swear there's something wrong with my left wrist. I must be doing some wrong movements while setting and packing the restaurant. What I know for sure, is that I cannot afford to have it in this condition. On my left wrist I'm supposed to balance the third plate and that is already hard as it is for me, besides the pain is just plain annoying.

Day #90

Wow, ninety days. Can hardly believe it!
Now when at the restaurant they ask me how long I've been in Australia I'll have to check on my answer. Sometimes you do not realize how fast the time flies, for instance, if I hadn't written #90 on today's post, I'd probably have missed that I came to Brisbane three months ago.

Today was a most dull day off, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do; so I did my laundry, ironing and I also cleaned the floors. I said I would try harder on that and I'm sticking to my word, for now.
Also, I'm working on positive thinking as I can't afford to start this new week in the same mood I ended the last.

Wow, novanta giorni. Stento a crederci!

Day #89

I spent this much needed day off with people, as opposed to my habit of spending my spare time on books and on the Internet.
With Sabri and Paolo, I went to Westfield Carindale, a huge, and I mean HUGE, shopping mall in SE Brisbane. We had lunch in one of those conveyor belt sushi restaurant where you get the small little trays out of the belt and pay according to the color of the tray. Since I'm grossed out by raw fish I just had chicken and prawn tempura - I like my food fried - and I really enjoyed it.

Then, we were joined by Nico and Marti who have moved two weeks ago and whom I do not see quite that often now. We had a tour in the mall, had coffees, I even bought myself an early present for my birthday! A red T-shirt that says 'Bazinga!' as The Big Bang Theory Sheldon Cooper's catchphrase.

Back in Hamilton, I met with Jess at Milany Gelato. We both had one of those cups with gelato, fruit/syrup and whipped cream on top. Nice. Not a particularly healthy dinner choice I might add, but once in a while you can do that, can't you?

ps.

Day #88

That awkward moment when you realize you still have to write a blog entry and it's 20 minutes past 2AM. Sorry, I was Skyping with a friend.
Not my best day at the restaurant, I must admit. I don't know, I'm still lacking my usual energy and it bugs me to no end. I just hope that having Sunday and Monday off might be what does the trick and gets me out of this awful mood.
Gah. When did I become Moaning Myrtle?

Day #87

Anyone feels like writing in my place tonight?
Just a regular day. I'm making an effort to remember to vacuum the house when I have a spare moment, so today I did that while I was waiting for the latest episode of Glee to be posted online.

We had too quiet an evening at the restaurant.
Scratch that. Scratch everything I've written so far.
Tonight I had a moment as I was chatting with my sister after the end of my shift. I kind of had a meltdown and started crying out of nowhere. I miss my sisters and mum and dad and friends and I feel so silly and immature not to be even able to live by my own without feeling this way.
Gosh, I blame it on the hormones. Effing period. There I said it.
I'm just going to sleep. I'm useless tonight.

Qualcuno vuole scrivere al mio posto oggi?
Giornata stra-nella-norma.
Ciclo dimmerce, oh, l'ho detto finalmente.
Vado a letto. Sono inutile questa sera.

Thursday 2 May 2013

Day #86

I do not feel like writing tonight. Ugh.

Oh well. Today I had lunch shift. It was much better and more manageable than last Sunday. I prepared some really good coffees and some terribly weak ones, which leads me to think that I've just been extremely lucky with the nice ones. Davina says that the secret is 'practice, practice, practice'.
Among the customers I had this afternoon, - wait for this - do you remember the French Conversation group that meets at the Hamilton Library every Thursday and Friday that I once ran into? Well, I waited this said group and the moderator of the conversation recognized me and remembered my name, I mean, only after I mentioned that I learned French at school and that I knew there meetings at the library. But still, impressive and awfully awkward.

I had a lovely evening at Karen's. We enjoyed gnocchi of course, Karen has become quite a masterchef with them since we're having them any other week, but most of all I am pleased to say - even though I had very little doubt about it - that they loved the pastries just as well as I do.
Later, with the girls, we watched the latest episode of Revenge and tried to speculate on the last three episodes of the season.
Ash and Casey recommended I should watch Pretty Little Liars. Season 1 aired when I was in Oregon and I enjoyed it a lot but I never checked on the following seasons. They passed me the whole lot, though, and I don't think I will be depressed after the end of Revenge this way.
