Day #84

Had a crazy night at the restaurant and finished my shift at 11:15PM. I got almost $70 tips though, which is extra good. I mean, that is like two pedicures and as if Davina had paid me ten dollars more per hour! Awesome.

Spent the morning and early afternoon reading Great Expectations and I'll tell you what, it's not bad at all! I'm shipping Pip and Estella like crazy, but that is just the inner fangirl in me that reaches out whenever she can. I know the characters have huge flaws, but I can't help feeling for them despite it all.
There are plenty of quotes I love and I wish the book I'm reading from was mine so that I could get a marker and highlight my favourite passages. I would have never thought I'd enjoy it this much, but I am most certainly glad I am. I'll probably check some more of Dickens' works. Any recommendations?

Day #83

I had a quiet day off today.
I Skyped with a friend I met on the Internet and was fun to eventually get to speak to him instead of just chatting and exchange book and movie recommendations.
The biggest surprise of the day came in the mail, though!! One of my friends from my hometown sent me a letter and I had no idea such a thing was coming: what a wonderful surprise that was! She also included a lovely pair of earrings for my birthday - that's still two weeks away, but I loved that she thought of it almost one month before the actual day!

I love letters and postcards. I love collecting them and re-read them after years and change. I remember when this same friend, Alessandra, sent me a postcard to the Maldives.. we never thought it possible, but she actually managed to get it to me. I still keep it as the most precious piece of mail I'd ever gotten. When I was in the Maldives I needed something I could hold on to from home and that postcard came at the right time.
Sumbliminal message: feel free to send me postcards, photographs, poems.. I don't think I'll be changing address in the next couple of months anyway, so.. what's stopping you?

Amo ricevere lettere e cartoline.

Day #82

Today I worked at the restaurant on lunch shift and let me tell you, I wouldn't have made it without Tony's help. Unlike last time, Davina didn't stay at the restaurant but went straight home, leaving me completely alone on the floor and behind the counter. It only makes sense that we had plenty of people over right at this convenient time.
As I said, God bless Tony! He served food to the tables himself when I was too busy welcoming new customers or taking orders from others, not to mention that he was really helpful as barista when four tables came one after the other and we were to serve them drinks ASAP.

A funny remark: one of the customers complimented me for taking care of all the tables and keeping a good eye on everybody's needs at the same time. At first I thought he was kidding, because I felt hopeless and completely disappointed in the service I was providing: being so busy I couldn't focus on each table the way I like to and I was afraid people might feel as if I neglected them.
So I said to him, 'Seriously? Today I'm a mess.' If he thought that was excellent service I wonder what he would say of what I call excellent service. But of course, I was flattered and I literally sighed of relief in acknowledging the fact that I might have been to harsh on myself when judging my work.

I think Davina feels bad for not giving me a day off on my birthday - you see, it will be Mother's Day, which is the Black Friday (beginning of the Christmas shopping season in US) of restaurants apparently and they cannot afford to be short of one person on the floor. I was saying, she must feel bad about it because she offered to give me a makeover (I seriously don't understand why people think I should need one, my sister was always insisting on it! Lol, probably because it's written all over my face that I have no clue about how to put eyeliner in a straight line or pluck my eyebrows in an acceptable way. Whaterver.)
I'm kind of looking forward to that, she always has perfect make-up! It'll be nice, just for a change. Even though it's going to be weird. I mean, she's still my boss.

Day #81

I've been working at the Trattoria for more than a month now and as sad as that is, today was the first time I actually managed to open the Chianti basket bottle without embarassing myself or needing any assistance.
Both Davina and Tunda tried to show me before, but I never quite got the hang on the technique till tonight - I can be pretty dumb if I want to. About time, I dare say. Turned out it wasn't difficult at all (!) of course the problem was all in my head: whenever I heard the bell calling to serve the Chianti to a table I'd hurry to be busy doing ANYTHING else and never got to practice with the bottle openers we have at the restaurants.

This morning, after breakfast shift, I went to the Hamilton library and robbed it. Just  kidding, but I did indeed check out a couple of (read: six) new books. Some of them I've never heard before, others were the inspiration to si-fi movies and last but not least, I got even a classic. I picked up Great Expectations by Charles Dickens because I was in a kind of Victorian-Age withdrawal after finishing The Infernal Devices series last week and that was the first option available. Not to mention that Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities are both featured in the saga, especially the latter as its love triangle is compared to that of Will, Tessa and Jem.
Anyways, I am in no way comparing the work of Ms. Clare to that of Mr. Dickens, I'm just saying that I love England in XIX Century (huge Jane Austen fan right here) and pretty much every novel I read set in that time frame has just something awesome about it. All the changes the Country went through, the industrial revolution, dress and behaviour code, social gatherings, do I need to go on?
But yeah, I'm almost 100 pages into it already and I'm liking it so far. I remember reading a passage of Bleak House in High School and being thoroughly puzzled. I couldn't have been more confused and Dickens was just describing London's fog. Oh well, I'm glad this one seems easier.

Day #80

Get ready for a useless post.
Today I
- woke up late. You know, when the bed has that perfect temperature, the pillows and mattress completely match the negative spaces of your head and body and you feel like laying under those soft blankets all your life, yep, that's why I didn't want to get up. Too bad I'm starting at 8 in the morning tomorrow.
- felt like a naughty child when Paolo scolded me (not quite literally) for not taking care of the shared places in the house like the kitchen and hallway as well as I should, that is to say vacuuming more often and cleaning the kitchen surfaces. Did I feel ashamed? Yes, I did. Would my mom be proud? No, she wouldn't. Will I work on it? Yes, I will. Let's not talk about this anymore. I hate letting people down.
- worked for just a couple of hours at the restaurant tonight because we weren't busy. Again. I'm starting not to like being sent home early anymore: it means no money at the end of the week! Hopefully tomorrow will be better, business-wise, probably it is just going to be hell for Tunda, Kyle and I.
- Skyped with a friend. You gotta love friends.

Preparatevi per un post inutile.
Oggi
Me ne sono vergognata? Certo che sì. Mia mamma sarebbe orgogliosa di me?

Day #79

Keeping it short because even when I mean to go to bed early like yesterday, I end up finishing writing at 1AM, and THAT is not early enough, even for my standards.

So, as I mentioned, I was exhausted yesterday and had to catch up on some sleep. I woke up at half past eleven this morning and it felt good. I'm actually planning on doing the same tomorrow morning!

Today was ANZAC day, that is to say, the national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, and a public holiday for many. Not for us at the restaurant, though. But that was ok, because I worked only in the evening and - unfortunately for Tony and Davina - we weren't too busy.

I guess that's all for the day. You can all guess what I did in between waking up and going to work, and if you'd like to know, I'm really liking Eleanor & Park. It is set in 1986: tapes, comic books and first loves blooming on school buses. What can you ask for more?

Day #78

Apparently, not only I write too much but I read too much as well.
Oh well, I guess we'll both have to live with that because there's no way I'd ever give up reading and if I'd stop writing then there wouldn't be a point to this blog anymore, would it? But I can stop writing about the books I read, if you'd like that better. If you find it boring, I mean.

Anyways.. Today I had the most perfect day off after that time I went south with Claire to Surfers Paradise.
I met with Jess this morning for a coffee and some shopping ($40), then I had a pedicure ($35), because my feet deserve to be spoiled once in a while, and spent two/three hours in the Botanic Gardens, laying on the lawn, soaking up the sun and - wait for it - reading. I didn't bring my laptop with me so I couldn't go on reading The Elite, but last week I got a copy of Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell from the library and I brought it with me today.

I loved the time I spent in the gardens: it wasn't too hot, the sun felt marvellous on my skin and I just enjoyed the sensation of the cool grass under my bare feet.
Later, I went to the markets in Queen St Mall to get my pastry fix ($10) - yep, I stopped by Annie and Amanda's stand to get some passion fruit cheesecake and other treats, and of course say hi to Enzo and Sabri! There I found Paolo and got a lift home.

So, now you see why I don't really go to the City that often: it is not good for my money! But whatever... no regrets, just love, like in the Katy Perry's song.
Once home, I took a nap because I was exhausted. I don't blame the lack of sleep (ah!), I think it was just a side effect of laying in the sun this afternoon. I was suddenly awaken by my cellphone ringing. Davina was calling me.

Now, you should be aware that it should be made illegal for me to answer my phone in the next 60 seconds following my awakening. In that minute I make even less sense than usual.
I did understand she was asking me to come to the restaurant in one hour - it was 6PM - but I couldn't really remember my name, the day of the week and the time. I think I babbled some gibberish in answer, but then had the good sense to apologize and tell her not to mind me too much because I'd just woken up and was having a hard time connecting my brain and mouth.
God, if you have ever called me when I was asleep, you know what I am talking about! As usual, I cannot stay shut, even though I am not thinking straight at that moment and what comes out of my mouth is just plain NONSENSE. I can't even remember what I say in these occasions because I'm clearly still sleeping!
Just this morning, the alarm clock on my cellphone startled me and it took me a while to understand why it had gone off, why it said it was 8 in the morning when it was probably 8 in the evening, I also wondered whether I slept for a whole day without realizing it and who might have been the smartass to change my date and time settings on my mobile to make it look 8PM as 8AM. I mean, can you believe it didn't occur to me that I might have set the allarm clock at 8AM because I needed to catch a bus one hour later? I thought about the conspiracy first! I clearly have some major problems, that or maybe I am just reading too much, as some of you mentioned.

Bottomline: I did go to the restaurant, despite today being my day off. But I stayed there for less than two hours doing just what I like the most: smiling and being nice to people. So yeah, all was good and once home, I savoured each bite of my passion fruit cheesecake pastry as I'd never get another one. God, I love that cheesecake.

Ma comunque, come canta Katy Perry, no regrets, just love, nessun rimpianto, solo amore.

Day #77

Quick post because apparently I write too much.
Today at the restaurant was quiet, nearly dead quiet. I was glad to go home early because today The Elite was released and the eBook I pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago was calling for me. I'd love to say that it is as good as The Selection, but so far - and I'm already halfway through it - it is not. I mean, the standard of the first book was pretty high to start with, so I'm not completely disappointed but I'll be back to you when I'm done with it.

Post veloce perché a quanto pare scrivo troppo.

Day #76

I did indeed finish the book last night, or should I say this early morning, since it was something like 5:30, but whatever. Then I was just too tired and emotionally unstable to do anything but drop asleep.
When I woke up at 1 o'clock everything was good, though. The hollowness came later.
I should really brace myself before starting anything I do, somehow I always end up too involved and sometimes that means hurt, as well. I'm not saying I did not like how the series ended, it was really clever of Ms. Clare and I did not see that one coming, but, yeah, mostly I felt sad because it ended. Perdiod.

So yeah, I avoided reading anything else for the rest of the day because it just didn't feel right, if you know what I mean? I was still ''digesting'' and in my mind going through the faces, the words and actions of those last chapters. It's weird, but that is how I read, that is how I've always approached any novel.
Instead, in the afternoon, I did my laundry, cleaned my bathroom and bedroom and at a quarter to seven I decided I simply couldn't stand staying inside any longer. I needed some fresh air.
So I set off for a walk and I didn't come back before eight thirty.

Winter is approaching and the days are now shorter than when I first came to Brisbane. At seven the moon was already up in the sky, the latter was pitch black. First I got to the river, walking towards Portside Wharf. I thought I might stop at the playground there, where Claire and I went when we read Catching Fire at the park one afternoon, but when I saw a dozen guys training for God know's which kind of sport I decided to keep walking, not really knowing where to go.
It was pretty dark, and at first I didn't thought my change of direction might lead me on a little pathway through the trees - the equivalent of a sidewalk, where the sidewalk was interrupted at the bus stop. I know it might sound weird, but given the encounter I had with the spider the other night, I felt extremely conscious of the snakes and spiders that could inhabit that little piece of green, and I walked along the fifty metre path as I might be crossing Sleepy Hollow.

Spooky experience apart, I found myself following the course of the river upstream, towards the city. Brisbane Australia is full of people obsessed over fitness and you might find sidewalks everywhere, where people can run, jog or cycle. The City is beautiful at night. I remember Claire telling me she loves it better at night time and that's true, it is kind of beautiful. From our suburb, once you're close to the river, you get THE view of the CBD and though one might argue that seen one big city at night, seen all, I still cannot help but wonder how lucky I am to be where I am now.
Truth to be told, my thoughts were gloomier, as I was walking down the road. The air was chilly and I still couldn't drive my mind away from Will, Tessa, Jem, the other characters and their stories. I thought of what I might be writing here on the blog when I got back, I thought of writing in general and how hard I wish I could be good at it. I ended up on a bench near a crook of the Brisbane River and stopped there.

Probably I was just tiring myself in the hope I would go to bed earlier tonight. Mission accomplished. Good night.

Missione compiuta. Buona notte.

Day #75

I see some of you have already been checking on the blog for today's entry, probably wondering if the spider killed me or the other way round. Well, here I am whilst the spider is half under one of my flip flops and half in the bin.

Today I started working at the restaurant at 10AM and covered the lunch shift. As I mentioned you, that means taking care of coffees and drinks as well as my usual waiting duties. We weren't busy, so everything was under control, except when this family started ordering cocktails to celebrate. Now, making coffees is one thing, but cocktails are a totally different business! Thank goodness, Davina was there to the rescue! Guess which cocktail they ordered first? Brianza, the one I proposed!!! And they liked it too!! I was a proud mama this afternoon.
Then after three o'clock, I was released and had the rest of the afternoon off.

Once home, I dedicated myself to the activity I like best: cooking. Just kidding, of course, I read all afternoon long, through the evening and stopped just to cook some zucchini for dinner and Skype with a friend.
Tomorrow I'll be off, so I see no reason why I shouldn't try to finish Clockwork Princess tonight. There's just hundred and thirty pages left, but I'll see how tired I am in a couple of hours. As for now, I have already cried enough tears, but I'm afraid more will come.
Anyway, don't know whether I mentioned this already, but I think I like the prequels even better than the original series! Characters and setting are amazing, and the insight on their personalities and personal motives runs far deeper than what it did in TMI, but probably just because those books were wrote in the point of view of the main character, whilst here it's shifting throught the story. The plot is just as good, though, which makes me think Ms. Clare must be a really good storyteller.

In fondo mi mancano solo 130 pagine..

Day #74

This afternoon as I was walking to the restaurant, I found myself thinking about how sweet it is to feel the sunshine on one's skin - it was a glorious day today, with just a hint of breeze, clear sky and perfect temperature. Now, getting ready to go to bed, or better yet, to read a little bit from Clockwork Princess, I can only think of the freaking spider that's hiding in my wardrobe. I do not want a spider in my wardrobe. Somebody make it leave!
Of course, it might be that the spider has been sharing the room with me for a while now without ever attacking me and decided to show up tonight just because it felt lonely, but who knows? I just hope the freaking thing is not poisonous. I'd hate my last blog entry to be about a spider in a wardrobe.

Tonight at the restaurant, it was crazy! Davina sent away the french guy that was trying out at the busiest time and it was just her, Tunda and me on the floor, with the restaurant packed. But we did it and I also got more compliments about my service - yep, keep 'em comin', I don't mind at all *grins*
Twice in two days, I've been asked whether Tunda and I were sisters. Now, we do not look that much alike. I mean, we resemble each other as any other two young women in their twenties with clear eyes and light brown hair could look alike. I could be both Claire's and Sabrina's sister according to that description- I guess it's just people being lazy at noticing details or assuming that since it's an Italian Restaurant everything must be run in the family. Oh well, it's not that I take it as an insult or anything, it's just that it's funny.

Just know that if I do not post anything tomorrow, then the poisonous spiders did get the best of me in the end.

Day #73

I'll procede for bullet points. It seems to me like I get through what I want to say better that way.

- It's almost Saturday here in Australia and I haven't watched Glee's latest episode yet. Therefore, I'll watch it and then be back to tell you about the day.
*45 minutes later* Feels better now. Nice episode. I got chills when Lea performed with Idina and later when she sang for her audition for Funny Girl. The beginning of the episode was gold, couldn't stop laughing.
- Today was sooooo tiring. I worked both in the afternoon and in the evening and despite the compliments - gosh, do I love a good shower of compliments! :P - and good tips I received, at the end of the shift I felt exhausted, much more than usual. But again, probably that's because I worked almost twice longer than usual.
This afternoon I was making coffees as well as waiting tables and thank goodness nobody complained about them! Cappuccinos are the thorn in my flesh, because as I mentioned you yesterday, getting the froth right is not that easy, but when I checked with the customers I was told they were excellent! Must be beginners' luck!
- I started on Clockwork Princess, the last book of The Infernal Devices series, so expect more drama
and nonsense about Will Herondale on my facebook page, I am not even sorry. LOL But yeah, jokes aside, you should totally check out Cassandra Clare's novels.

I feel like there was something important I should share with you but I lost it, cannot remember what that was. Oh, well.

*45 minuti dopo* Decisamente meglio.

Day #72

Sorry if I haven't posted sooner today, but against my better judgement I read till now. I finished the second installment of The Infernal Devices series and I can positively affirm that I am no longer in control of my feelings. The whole book was a little bit too much.
Together with Augustus Waters (TFiOS) and Peeta Mellark (THG), Will Herondale - one of the main characters of the series - could be considered one of my babies. Why do my babies have to suffer like that?!?! Mama wants to protect them but she can't get into a fictional story and hug them tight.
You remember when I mentioned you I was going crazy, right?

Anyway, I worked at the restaurant at lunch time. Davina showed me how to do standard coffees with the huge machine we have, because on Sunday afternoon I will be alone on the floor, taking care of both taking orders, carrying food and getting drinks and coffees ready. Truth to be told, we're not busy at all at lunch time, so I shouldn't have too many problems managing it all, but let me tell you this, getting the milk hot enough and with the right amount of froth to top the cups up is not as easy as it sounds.
But I'm glad for the opportunity, and as Davina said today, being barista, as well as waitress, would be a great advantage for a possible future job. I'm so thankful for the training they're giving me, not to mention the patience with which she teaches me ground rules and tricks.

Day #71

I'll just say three things.

1) Today I'm posting way before midnight because I realized I cannot start reading before I write something on here. You see, I'm afraid when I read I just lose track of time and I seriously cannot afford going to sleep at 4AM for the third night in a row.

2) I was so happy to get back to work today! These have been the most tiring days off of my life. I read at nighttime, slept during the morning, hardly left the house (weather sucked almost all the time anyway), ate not regularly (food comes second place when you are reading certain books) but drank coffee copiously. I was afraid I might have a stroke this afternoon when I drank the uptenth mug of caffè latte after eating an orange; for some weird reason I thought the combination of the two might be fatal.
I was so happy to go back also because I thought that that might prove to be an excellent distraction from all my Infernal Devices thoughts and daydreams - I mean, I needed a break from two nights of reading about Will, Tessa and Jem and two days picturing in my head what I read! When hardly no one showed up at the restaurant, I ended up wondering about them and their freaking love triangle, and all the things that could still go wrong in more than a half of book 2 and in the whole third book! I looked for spoilers of the endgame couple just before heading for work, because I'm substantially a bad person, but since I didn't want to do it too directly - that'd be cheating - I got even more confused!!! I found a fanart with two characters getting married, but then I thought I read on the author's blog that one of them had children with the other and I started to freak out because I still have one book and more than a half to read and I have no clue what will happen and I know I should enjoy the ride as I go, not forcing or trying to see foreshadowing where there is none, but you can totally see how I couldn't manage to focus on the floor tonight with such thoughts and how then I tried to focus and later thanked God when some customers came and eventually did distract me. Man, was it hard for the first couple of hours!!! *breathes*

3) I think I might be going slightly crazy.
This wasn't what I planned to write, I wanted to say that despite what my friend Danilo told me before I left Italy, that is to say, that I'd gain hundreds and hundreds of kg once here in Australia, I'm actually doing all right. Even lost 5kg already and working on my arm muscles lifting all those tables and chairs while setting and packing up the restaurant, despite all the cheesecake and banana bread I'm eating. Now you see how this just proves the point I made in the first sentence of this paragraph. I'm switching subjects from hardcore fangirling to weight gaining in a matter of periods. I'm starting to make no sense. I blame it on the coffee.

Day #70

Guess what's the time? Way past midnight. Yay for good propositions.
Anyway, it took me so long to come to the blog and write a new entry because I was finishing the first installment of The Infernal Devices series, once again by Cassandra Clare. Clockwork Angel was really good!!! What I loved the most was that, having written other 5 books on pretty much the same subject, she still didn't fall into repetitions and everything felt new and familiar at the same time!!! Yep, I'm diggin' it and I'll start on the second book as soon as possible (read: right after I publish this entry, even though I shouldn't because it's already 1AM and I should really sleep at night instead of fangirling over fictional characters.)
I'm not sure days off help me at all, not if I end up reading till the dead of the night.

Indovinate che ora è? Parecchio dopo la mezzanotte. Evviva i buoni propositi.

Day #69

I must have some serious problems if I cannot pull myself to write the daily blog entry before this ungodly hour. I mean, why do I get inspiration only past midnight?
Nevermind.

So, if you are among my fb friends or following the Australian Me Facebook page, you probably know that I've been pretty psyched about the release of the teaser trailer for Catching Fire during the MTV Movie Awards today. I tried all morning to find a good streaming of the show, but only succeeded in screwing my Internet browser up - I'm such a computer-wiz! In the end, I wasn't able to watch the show, but I ended up checking regularly The Hunger Games Explorer page - on which they vented they would upload the two minutes long teaser - till it was eventually uploaded.

I love it. I don't know what I'll do for the next 7 months waiting for the movie to come out, but I'll figure something out. These two minutes are precious, I love that they decided to present only the first third of the book, only hinting at what may come next, not to spoil the party for the movie-goers. I love the fact that we're still getting insights of the Capitol like Snow's office, even though the books follow Katniss in first person. Dammit, I love everything about it! Jennifer Lawrence's broken voice always shatters my ability to form even the simplest coherent thought and just like when she cried out 'I volounteer' in the first movie, when she's speaking in tears here with Haymitch- oh man, it just breaks me! This looks like it's going to be one awesome piece of a movie!

I also finished City of Lost Souls tonight. I liked it a lot! I remember being disappointed with the fourth book, even though I don't seem to recollect why was that, but this one was great! Only 11 months to go till the last installment! Yay. This is the standard life of a fangirl, a life of feelings and waiting.

Don't worry, I did not spend the whole day in - with Sabrina we went to do some shopping, a stroll and later we had gelato for dinner at Franca's ice cream shop in New Farm.

Day #68

This morning I worked for a couple of hours and the was off for the rest of the day. I spent most of it reading City of Lost Souls - which is awesome, so far! - the fifth book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I wish I could just read it all night long, but I'm afraid I'll fall asleep any minute now.

In the afternoon, I went with Sabrina and Martina to Portside to have some drinks in this pub called Byblos. I got this passion fruit cocktail which was really good and we shared some french fries because we have a balanced diet.
Later in the evening, we had dinner together. They wanted me to cook, but given that Martina is a chef and Sabri is a natural, I gave them the honor. I actually bought my way out having the drinks on me earlier that afternoon - oh, the thing's I'd do, not to humiliate myself!

Day #67

I hate to let you guys down, but Jess and I didn't go to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary today, and I know some of you are craving for pictures of kangaroos and koalas, but looks like it might take a while longer for me to see some in real life.

This morning the weather sucked. It was pouring rain till past noon and even then the sky never quite cleared out. I spent the morning in, started reading another book and got ready for a Saturday night at the restaurant.
Did I mention to you that Davina, my boss, asked us, waiting staff, to come up with two cocktails for the new season cocktail menu? I asked my best friends for help and they came up with two different drinks, with respective names. One of them, Maracaibo, is a mixture of different kinds of liquors and juices. We first created it one crazy summer night, while dancing and singing the omonimous song. We might have had already a couple of shots before starting on it, actually. The second one is named after the geografic region we come from, the Brianza, and it is sort of an apple caipiroska, but it isn't. So yeah, whatever, tonight we launched the new menu and it is kind of nice reading on the specials board Brianza and Maracaibo. It reminds me of some of the best things awaiting for me in Italy, gives you yet another reason to smile while working on the floor.

Anyway, just before publicly launching the new drinks, she wanted to test them and had me and Lory - one of her regular customers - to sip 4 or 5 different cocktails and I was about to start my shift!!! Oh gosh, by the end of it, the three of us were giggling and wearing the biggest smiles possible! I thought I'd never make it to the end of the shift!
ANYWAY - what happened is that both Davina and I got an order wrong tonight. Of course we were busy as hell and doing three things at the same time, but I blame it all on the alcohol. Never drinking before a shift ever. even if it's FOC. Luckily both customers were kind enough to eat what they got, despite it wasn't what they asked for! My bad! I felt soooooo sorry!
Anyway, I must have been really good for the rest of the evening because both Tunda and I, we got $50 each of tips! Nice!!
Going to bed now.. tomorrow I serve breakfast at 8!

Day #66

It's 23:15 and I'm cooking pasta.
Nope, I'm not completely crazy.
Nope, it's not that I didn't have enough food at Karen's.
Nope, I'm not having sudden craves for midnight snacks.

Tomorrow Jess and I decided to go to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and we're setting off fairly early in the morning, and I don't feel like waking up 20 minutes earlier just to have some pasta ready.
So, I'll try to be short, because I could do with some sleep before the long day ahead.

- Woke up late today because, yeah, DAY OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!
- Had brunch around eleven thirty because I was too lazy to go to do my shopping before and didn't really fancy cooking anything more engaging than scrambled eggs.
- Watched a movie - The Lucky One, based on Nicholas Sparks' novel. I liked it.
- Headed out to the library and the grocery store only to be stopped by two guys whom I thought they were trying to hit on me, only to find out they were Mormons.
- Once at the library, found a French conversation group that I will probably join next week.
- Passed for the crazy girl, stomping in the neighbourhood in high wedges, wearing sunglasses and with a pack of toilet paper on my head to protect me from the pouring rain because a) it was sunny when I left home, hence the sunglasses b) I didn't bring an umbrella.
- Watched Glee's latest episode. THE FEELS.
- Spent a lovely afternoon and evening with Karen, Tony, Ashlee and Casey. It was a much needed catch up, especially since I'm alone in the house these days. Claire has left, Paolo is in Sydney for the weekend, and Sabri has totally different working hours from mine. I kind of feel lonely sometimes. Karen and Tony killed me with some hilarious memories of their trip to Bangkok.
- Fought with my sister on fb. It sucked.
- Started cooking pasta at 23:10.

Pasta is ready now and I'm going to sleep. Thank you so much for reading though this uninteresting list of things, I really appreciate the time you are spending on me. Love you

Day #65

Ok, first of all: hello to you, my Russian readers!!! Wow! I was so pleased to see these many views from your country this last couple of days! I wish I could speak Russian because a) that'd be totally cool b) I would know better than thank you for the time you spend reading my blog with just a спасибо - yes, I totally googled it because I know you pronounce it 'spassiba' but I had no clue how to write it.
And speaking of coincidence and lovely Russian people, tonight at the restaurant I served this young couple and they happened to come from Russia. I showed off just a little bit with a добрый вечер - again, thank you Google! - and a до свидания when they left. I know I should probably have learnt more than 'Good morning/afternoon/evening', 'Thank you' and 'Goodbye' in a year in the Maldives spending time with my friends Masha, Halida, Tanya and Niya, but I guess I'll have to deal with regret.

Today was a good day. Definitely not as busy as yesterday, but with enough things to do, long story short: my favourite kind of shift.
Tomorrow I'm off and while in the morning I'll probably return one book to the library and do some shopping, I made arrangements with Karen and her daughters to have an early dinner at their place in the late afternoon.

Today I finished reading My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult. Ashlee, Karen's oldest daughter recommended it to me and warned me I shouldn't expect the same kind of epilogue as the one in the movie. Boy, was she right! I bawled my eyes out - not that I had too different a reaction when I saw the film, but this was even more overwhelming. I have another book by Picoult. I'll probably start it tomorrow as it is already past midnight now and I kind of should go to bed.

Day #64

SO TIRED.
It has been a long day. This morning I went to the Markets in Queen St Mall to say hi to Sabri and Enzo and buy some pastries from my favourite stand. I got to have two for myself this time since there's just three of us in our unit and chose the passion fruit cheesecake one - which is my favourite! -  and the lavander cheesecake, then I just checked with Sabri what she and Paolo fancied.
I had both of my cheesecakes in the afternoon just before heading to the restaurant.

My shift was endless tonight, I mean, thank goodness it didn't feel like that when I was working, but once home all the tiredness of a 7 hrs shift kind of kicked in. We were really busy tonight - the memories of the first tables I served tonight are lost in a blurry haze, I must be really tired.

STANCHISSIMA.

Day #63

Claire has just left for Italy.
We spent the afternoon in the City as she had some last souvenir shopping she had to do and met up with Yooni. She later came to our place to have dinner with us.
Fun Fact: first meal I had when I came to Brisbane was gnocchi with Napoli sauce. Guess what we had today for Claire's last? SAME THING! And it was totally a coincidence, it's not like we planned it.. we just decided to have what was left in the freezer. Spooky, ain't it?

Anyway everybody is leaving these days. Today Claire, yesterday Quasimodo - my little toe looks completely normal now.

Last thought of the day. I would have never thought I'd get along this well with Claire. I mean, we come from the same 17-thousand-people town, you'd think you were already getting on with everybody you were supposed to! I wonder whether I'd have more friends in my hometown if only I took care of getting to know them as well as I know Claire now.
I don't think it was just camaraderie sprung from our situation, even though we probably never would have thought of being friends if we hadn't gotten to know each other in this situation. Whatever, it's late, bottom line: I'm glad I got to know her and no matter where we will be in the future, I guess I will always think of her as a good friend of mine.

Assurdo!

Day #62

Here in Nudgee Rd we're getting ready for Claire's departure. We just finished reading Catching Fire, Claire liked it a lot and she'll probably borrow my copy of Mockingjay once she gets back home.
This afternoon we decided we were going to have ice cream for dinner, but as Milany turned out to be closed, we set for Subway, wich is literally the next bar/restaurant/fast food on Racecourse Rd. We then had some Nutella with Claire's friends and got back to our place for tea and yet another sweet: chocolate chip muffin! We made up for the ice cream, let's say.

Today was a quite day. Claire packed and I read and surfed the Internet. Regular day off stuff.

Un giorno off come un altro.

Day #61

It's almost midnight and I should probably start writing to you about today.
It started off with a 2 and a half hours shift at the restaurant, then I spent the rest of the day with Jess, the British girl I got to know through Gumtree and met in person last Thursday. Today was her birthday and she asked me whether I wanted to join her and her sort-of-cousin for something sweet to eat. Besides, she had to pick up her cellphone charger from a Backpackers down in Fortitude Valley and I offered to accompany her and show her a little bit of the city centre.

We set to catch the same bus, even though I would have had to get on a couple of bus stops before her. When I passed the bus stop where she was supposed to be but wasn't there, I knew we were about to get in a lot of drama, especially given that I couldn't even contact her because her phone had very little battery left.
Luckily she succeeded in calling me and we decided to meet downtown after I collected her charger in the Valley. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, I wasn't able to retrieve her charger and once in Queen St Mall we had another hard time to find each other! We hadn't even started the afternoon and we had already messed up a couple of times!

Anyway, the afternoon got better. She did some shopping and then we walked a little bit around. In the markets area there was supposed to be a Vintage Market, but it was little more than 10 people selling their old clothes out of their open suitcases - disappointing. It had nothing to do with the level of organization of a Wednesday Market in that same square!!
We sat in George Square and then walked a bit around Roma Park and South Bank. There we decided to have chinese for dinner. We both got Singapore Noodles with chicken and prawns. Yummy! But we couldn't bring ourselves to finish it, furthermore we were to meet Emily, Jess' cousin, in less than an hour for dessert! Little digestive walk from South Bank to George Square and then as we had our bus at 9pm we decided not to go too far from Adelaide St once Emily joined us. We ended up in this bar/restaurant which apparently enjoys smashing or having their tea pots stolen and which despite its various dessert menu, had only Nutella Calzone filled with strawberries and extra chocolate left. We decided to get two because we weren't hungry enough to get one each. Little we knew that one would have been more than enough for the three of us!!! Starting on the second was almost painful and, though we did not finish it, I still rolled back to the bus stop, feeling as full as ever!

All in all, I had a great day and I hope Jess enjoyed her birthday as well. I feel bad my friends have to stick with me instead of sharing their special day with their loved ones, like what happened to Sabri last Valentine's Day.

Day #60

Two months. Wow. It has been a really good ride so far, but now I think I'm ready to go back to Italy.
Ah, gotcha. Of course I'm not going back, I'm not even thinking about it - I mean, it feels like I just started something here and I really want to see how it goes.

So, it is late now and tomorrow I start working at 8 again, so I'll be short, like really really short.
The other day Davina talked to me and told me not to be disappointed if I didn't get too many tips or if I felt I didn't get tipped enough for the service I provided, and I was completely taken aback by her words. I mean, does it look like I only do that for the tip? Do I only do that for the tip?
I don't think so. Of course I seek positive feedback, I mean, I work really hard to give the best service possible because I'm genuinely happy when customers are happy, but I do not need to get more money back for that, I mean, I already get paid for doing my job.
Maybe what I want the most is for my superiors to know that I was good enough, that I exceeded expectations once again. Now that I think about it, I've always been like this, seeking for approval and all - since primary school and maybe even before that, in my own house.
I probably could do without the tips if they just handed over a 50 words comment on how wonderful I was. Oh gosh, am I THAT insecure to need all that? It might also be that I just enjoy being praised for my work - yes, this is far more likely than insecurity.

Ok, I ran out of time. And you just enjoyed a delightful insight on what it is like to be one of my family members. God bless them, they've put up with me for so long, especially my sisters.
Anyway, all this babbling comes from yet another thing that happened at the restaurant - tonight: one of the customers came to me and gave me $20 tip, I thanked him of course, and as I was putting the note in our tips jar he demanded that I kept the money for myself and not share it because he was giving it to me. Now, that is not the restaurant policy, but Davina noticed the exchange and said it was all right for me to keep it in that case. I'm not saying I'm not flattered that they appreciated me that much, because I am, but I would have willingly shared it with Tunda and Amy. Maybe what I really couldn't do without was having my work aknowledged in front of the boss. Am I despicable for thinking like that? Like in Hilton, I would have appreciated a good word on the comment card they had to fill in even more than actual money, and even though I was terrified by Zafer - my DO - calling me Angel, as one of my guests suggested, I cannot deny that I was really flattered. What do you guys think? Am I completely nuts?
Now I really gotta go. Oh God, I still have to translate all of this in Italian!

Due mesi. Wow!

A domani!
